Director’s Statement

'Huí Jiā' is a semi-biographical short film inspired by the experiences of my mother. She worked as an actor back in China and will be playing the semi-fictionalised version of herself for this project. Growing up, I was constantly reminded of the sacrifice both her and my father made in creating a new life here in Australia for me and my sister. They started and ran a Chinese restaurant where I grew up, somewhere I still work at today and holds many dear memories.

Huí Jiā is not only an ode to my mother’s sacrifice and work ethic, but a working creative collaboration between the two of us. The film will be shot in the actual restaurant she once owned and worked in for 20 years, making it all the more meaningful to myself and our creative team.

Alexander Nesic was selected as the Cinespace Residency recipient for Autumn 2024. ‘Huí Jiā’ is being completed as a part of this residency program.
